The present medieval church was built on the site of the Saxon church. St Margaret’s Well in the churchyard, held to have healing properties, made it a place of pilgrimage for many centuries. We are told that “the very pavement was worn away by the knees of the pilgrims”, and the restored cripples hung up their crutches within the church to testify to their cure. People still visit St Margaret’s in large numbers, and from all over the world, looking for a place of prayer, beauty, and peacefulness.
You can find our position on this map. It is easy to walk up to St Margaret’s Church from Oxford by crossing Port Meadow. If you need refreshment on your journey, a good place to stop is the Perch pub in the village.
We are currently trying to raise money for urgent repairs to the church building. Find out more here.
